Aricept (Donepezil)
Aricept is a centrally acting reversible acetylcholinsterase inhibitor that is used as a palliative treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, a study published in 2006 indicated that Aricept may improve cognitive function in patients with severe Alzheimer’s disease symptoms. While Aricept is also prescribed to treat Lewy body dementia and vascular dementia, it is not currently approved by the FDA to treat these conditions.
Aricept is marketed by Pfizer and Eisai, and was approved by the FDA in 1996. Aricept is also available in a generic form that is manufactured by Ranbaxy Labs.
The use of Aricept may result in a number of side effects, including nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, vomiting, fatigue, anorexia, muscle cramps, coughing up blood, painful or difficult urination and seizure.
