Advair Diskus (Fluticasone Propionate)
Advair Diskus is an oral inhaler that is used in the long term treatment of asthma. The drug contains a combination of fluticasone and salmeterol, which reduce swelling in the airways and open air passages in the lungs. Advair Diskus is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and was approved by the FDA in 2000.
Side effects of Advair Diskus include a higher chance of infections, lower bone mineral density, glaucoma and cataracts, irregular heartbeat, increased blood pressure, headache, tremor, and allergic reactions.
In November of 2005, the FDA instructed GlaxoSmithKline to update Advair Diskus labels to alert patients and doctors that the use of Advair Diskus may increase the chance of severe asthma episodes and death due to the episodes. Due to the risk, the FDA required GlaxoSmithKline to include a black box warning in Advair Diskus labeling.
