Abilify (Aripiprazole)
Abilify is an atypical antipsychotic and antidepressant that is used to treat people who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. It may also be prescribed to treat irritability in children with autism.
Side effects include restlessness, headache, agitation, anxiety, fatigue or weakness, nausea and vomiting, constipation, light-headedness, insomnia, sleepiness, shaking, blurred vision and sexual dysfunction. Use of Abilify may also result in uncontrollable twitching, tremors, seizure and weight gain; neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a life threatening neurological disorder characterized by fever, muscle stiffness and delirium; suicidal thoughts; tardive dyskinesia; stroke; and allergic reaction. In addition, older adults who have been diagnosed with dementia and who are taking Abilify may have an increased rate of mortality due to cardiovascular issues or serious infections.
In 2004, the FDA instructed Bristol-Myers Squibb, the manufacturer of Abilify, to advise health care professionals of a revision to the warnings section of Abilify labeling regarding the potential increased risk of hyperglycemia and diabetes in people taking the drug.
