Enbrel (Etanercept)

Enbrel is used to treat autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid, juvenile rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis; Crohn’s disease; plaque psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis.  It is manufactured by Immunex Corporation and was first marketed in late 1998.

Using Enbrel may result in certain side effects, including headache, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, stomach pain, weakness, cough, seizures, bruising, bleeding, blisters, rash, hives, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing, vision problems and dizziness.

In May of 2008, the FDA required Immunex to include a black box warning on Enbrel labeling, warning about the risk of tuberculosis.  The black box warning was updated in September of 2008 to include a warning about the risk of potentially fatal fungal infections, including histoplasmosis, which is a fungal infection that can spread beyond the respiratory system and attack internal organs.  In August of 2009, the FDA required a black box warning on Enbrel labels, warning consumers about the increased risk of cancer.
